Christmas Farm Inn now a Valley Original

The Christmas Farm Inn & Spa is part of The Valley Originals, a group of locally owned and operated restaurants in the Mount Washington Valley.

Valley Original flagWe display the group’s yellow flag with a fork and a plate. When you see the flag at a business, you know the owners want to nurture and promote independent restaurants.

We believe that good food is essential to a healthy mind, body and soul. That’s why we offer a menu of freshly prepared, authentic cuisine incorporating natural and organic ingredients, meats and produce that naturally looks great and tastes great.

We source available products locally and regionally, and work with quality purveyors to ensure farm-to-table quality and freshness throughout the year. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available, and we can cater to most dietary requests. See our daily specials and enjoy the taste of real food made from scratch and cooked fresh. We do not add MSG or artificial flavor enhancers in our food.

Another good thing about the Valley Originals is that it supports local organizations, charities and activities, so dining with a Valley Originals member restaurant not only means great food and service, but also support for good causes here in the area. All members are involved in the community effort. The Valley Originals gave $172,000 back to non-profit organizations in 2012 alone.

Where To Ski In Jackson, New Hampshire

ski1Some of the best skiing in the area is just minutes from the Christmas Farm Inn, and the Jackson New Hampshire ski trails are getting great press recently from big publications like Boston Magazine.

  • The most convenient skiing is the Jackson Ski Touring trails right outside the Christmas Farm Inn cottages and rooms. Simply step out your door, strap on your cross country skis or snowshoes and hit 55 miles of trails through the beautiful countryside around Jackson. You can also rent equipment from the Jackson Ski Touring Center.
  • Boston Magazine and Ski Magazine have both picked Wildcat Mountain for its scenery. If you love the great outdoor this is the perfect place to go to be wowed by the beautiful White Mountains. Enjoy the lifts as much as the downhill thrill when surrounded by the stunning natural wonder all around at Wildcat. The New York Times also praised it for its simplicty and the emphasis on pure nature in the midst of the White Mountain National Forest, without bright light and commercial sprawl. With plenty of expert trails, it's not to be missed for the true ski fan, but have trail easiest enough for intermediates and beginners.
  • ski2Black Mountain has also been picked by Boston Magazine for best value. With four lifts, 40 trails, a half pipe, and two terrain parks, you get a lot of mileage for your ticket. It's been noted by Travel and Leisure magazine as especially great for families, thanks to its low key, low tech vibe, 20 trails of different difficulties, and proximity of Jackson Ski Touring center's nordic trails.
  • Bretton Woods has earned chops for the variety of activities available. The resort offers not only ot just skiing and snowboarding, but also ice skating, tubing, a heated outdoor pool, horse-drawn sleighs, or even dog sledding. It also underwent a decade long improvement plan to include even more options, such as ziplines, a sledding hill, and a playground. They also upgraded their rental eqipment.
  • Cranmore Mountain is a very popular destination that has also recently undergone a number of upgrades. They have opened new trails and connectors in recent years, as well as upped their snowmaking capabilities, adding the mountain coaster, giant swing, and ziplines, and improved the lifts.

In The Spirit of Christmas

plourde2Many of you may know that the Christmas Farm was so named after a gentleman bought Perkin's Farm and Cottages in 1941 and, in the spirit of Christmas; he gave it to his daughter as a Christmas gift. She duly named it her 'Christmas Farm'.

In 1946 she sold the farm to Dick and Doris Welch, who wanted to operate it as an inn, and they called it the Christmas Farm Inn. In the spirit of Christmas, the Welch's began traditions that were passed down to the Jim and Eva Powers, who bought the inn in 1972; and then on to Bill and Sydna Zeliff, who bought the inn in 1976. For 24 years the Zeliffs grew the inn to be a household name in New England by warmly greeting their guests, making it a place where memories were made and ensuring that the spirit of Christmas lived at the Christmas Farm Inn. The Christmas Farm Inn became a founding sponsor of the Polar Express Event that raises money for the Believe In Books Literacy Foundation – now nationally recognized, and a Christmas tradition for thousands of young families throughout New England. The Zeliffs planted a Christmas tree in Jackson Village and, with the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, started the tradition of a community Christmas tree lighting ceremony every year at the tree. After the Christmas Carols were sung, people would gather at the historic barn at the Christmas Farm Inn to enjoy some Christmas treats and be merry – a wonderful start to the holiday season!

In the spirit of Christmas, the Zeliffs passed on these traditions to George, Naomi and Mike Tolley, who bought the inn in year 2000. The Tolleys tastefully modernized the rooms and property, built the Carriage House with 12 suites (all named after the 12 Days of Christmas!), and added all-season resort amenities; among them a world-class spa, indoor pool, hot tub and fitness center. They also added 'spa' to the name - the Christmas Farm Inn & Spa. In the spirit of Christmas, the Tolleys carried the torch of tradition, keeping the flame alive and entrusting that the values and ideals of the Christmas Farm were preserved for future generations. Then they passed it onto us!

mrs clauseFrom the very beginning, we were smitten by the whole idea of the Christmas Farm Inn & Spa and its sense of community. We believed! We first managed the inn as partners with the Tolleys for almost three years, and then we bought the inn in May of 2013. It is truly our privilege to carry on the traditions of the Christmas Farm Inn & Spa and host many of you since our arrival. Last Tuesday we put up a 16 ft Christmas tree in our historic barn, and many others around the estate. After a festive Thanksgiving, the first Polar Express weekend started on Friday with great excitement for our guests and staff alike. Over 50 children and their parents, grandparents, aunt and uncles were entertained in the barn by the fire with activities and music, along with a special visit and book reading by Mrs. Claus under the Christmas tree.  Dressed in their pajamas and clutching their train tickets, they eagerly went off to board the Polar Express train, with anxious anticipation of meeting Santa and his little helpers. On Sunday the local choir led the community to sing Christmas carols around the village Christmas tree. The bells jingled on the horse drawn sleighs and Santa drew cheers from the crowd as he lit the tree again for the first time this year. Members of the Jackson community, our inn guests and others joined us for more caroling and treats by the fire in our historic barn. Our big tree glistened with lights and decorations, and all were merry.

The Christmas Farm Inn & Spa has long been aplace where memories are made and traditions are celebrated or, indeed, have their beginning. We have only praise for the love and dedication of those before us and all they have done to make the Christmas Farm Inn & Spa what it is today. We see ourselves as caretakers of the inn and the traditions that live here - not just at Christmas time, but all throughout the year. In the spirit of Christmas, we celebrate the simple pleasures of life every day: friends, family, fun, love, adventure, wellbeing and inspiration. With love, these things will continue to live on. Thank you all for sharing this with us. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Happy Holidays

Ideal Fall Foliage Viewing in Jackson, New Hampshire

1071 1New England is famous for its beautiful fall foliage. Its historically short growing season is responsible, with cold springtime nights, warm days, and brief summers that encourage just the kind of sap flow and chemical production that maximizes falls colors in native trees like the birch, maple, and spruce. The conditions are just right to produce a spectacular show unlike anywhere else in the world. Even Thoreau marveled at this, marveling throughout a whole essay on the topic entitled “Autumnal Tints.”

"We love to see any redness in the vegetation of the temperate zone. It is the color of colors. This plant speaks to our blood. It asks a bright sun on it to make it show to best advantage, and it must be seen at this season of the year. Some single trees, wholly bright scarlet, seen against others of their kind still freshly green, or against evergreens, are more memorable than whole groves will be by-and-by. How beautiful, when a whole tree is like one great scarlet fruit full of ripe juices, every leaf, from lowest limb to topmost spire, all aglow, especially if you look toward the sun! What more remarkable object can there be in the landscape? A queen might be proud to walk where these gallant trees have spread their bright cloaks in the mud."

MainInnLoungeFirePlace-WEBChristmas Farm Inn is in the heart of fall foliage country, surrounded by the beautiful White Mountains. In early September, Visit New Hampshire’s website starts a Foliage Tracker and information specific to different areas of the state, including the White Mountains region. That’s a good barometer to use to time your visit, especially as 2013’s weather has been a tad unusual. Once you are here, there are many amazing trails of varying difficulties that will give you a great view of the pretty autumn colors, as well as the White Mountains’ famous waterfalls.  The trails around the Kancamagus Highway are especially impressive. The Boulder Loop Trail near the Covered Bridge Campground is a simple 3.1 mile loop that isn’t too challenging. You’ll see Mt. Chorcorua, Mt. Passaconaway, and Middle Sister and have plenty of chances to rest, snap some photos, and appreciate your surroundings.

Mountains-WebMount Shaw also offers great views of the area around Lake Winnipesaukee. Mount Kearsarge is a great pick for those with little ones, as the trailhead from Rollins State Park is very short. For older kids, start in Winslow where the trail is a little more challenging. From either direction you’ll reach a summit with a 360 degree view that is sure to wow you. For those who aren’t interested in hiking, the Kancamagus Highway and Mount Washington Auto Road have excellent views from the comfort of your car or motorcycle. If you want to stick close to the Inn, simply rent one of our Carriage House rooms, which have especially good views of the surrounding landscape.

However you choose to enjoy the fall colors, be sure to take Thoreau’s advice and take it all in. This kind of beauty happens only once a year for a few weeks, and you don’t want to miss out on the White Mountains putting on their very best show for you!

The Chef's Plate Features Christmas Farm Inn Restaurant

You may know of The Chef's Plate, a weekly half-hour show that features local chefs from all over New Hampshire who will be rpreparing favorite recipes. You can catch the show on WBIN-TV and NH Public Access. It's a wonderful way to learn about some of the best places to eat in the state, and because of that we're super proud to have Chef Stan and the Christmas Farm Inn restaurant featured! After all, this is one New Hampshire B&B that offers more meals than just breakfast!

We were recently one of a few White Mountain area restaurants visited by Helen of Chef's Plate, who got to try a variety of dishes. The Prince Edward Island mussels steamed in a white wine sauce of tomatoes, garlic, red chili flakes and chorizo gets rave reviews, as does the Crispy Calimari seasoned with Chinese five spice and Szechuan peppercorns atop a seaweed salad.

Moving in from the sea, there is the Green Apple Bourbon Strip Steak, a delicious 12 oz NY strip steak char-broiled and served with a green apple bourbon demiglas. The Braised Lamb Shank is always a favorite, as is the best-selling Maple Pecan Salmon! Helen also got to try the suburb Oven-Roasted Tuscan Haddock baked with creamy artichoke, roasted tomato, and spinach topping. For dessert they sampeld the Maple Crème Brulee and the famous Chocolate Bag,

Helen was impressed with Chef's Stan's flare for presentation as well as his dedication to seasonal menu changes and inventive cocktails like the Morning Glory Martini with pineapple, organge juice, and guava with Vodka, Rum, and Brandy.

In addition to sampling the food, Helen got a tour of the Christmas Farm Inn property and spa, inclduing the many diffrent types of rooms and the fantastic Carriage House Suites. Sandra also took her on a tour to the AVEDA concept spa. The products are all based on sustainable, organic sourced ingredients, similar to the philosophy of the restaurant's seasonal items.

We're so glad to have shared our New Hampshire Inn with Helen and the Chef's Plate team! With so many delicious dishes included in the video, it's almost impossible to not have your mouth watering by the end. Don't prolong your hunger-- come to Christmas Farm Inn for dinner soon and try something spectacular for yourself! You'll see why we're one of New Hampshire's best travel destinations!

Christmas Farm Inn: A Jackson New Hampshire Hotel with History

saltboxNew England is known for its quaint, quirky villages, and Jackson, New Hampshire is no exception. With a long history, dating back to the 1770s and postcard scenery, Jackson could be the dictionary definition of a New England town. Early settlers poured in throughout the late 18th and early 19th century, attracted by good farmland and the picturesque White Mountains.

The area has almost always attracted tourists, especially when the White Mountain school of artists flocked to the region to capture the local landscapes. While Jackson was slower than other villages to become a full-fledged resort town, it was the artists of this school who really put the town on the map.

Parts of the Christmas Farm Inn date back to Jackson’s early heritage. Though it wasn’t originally an inn, the Saltbox was probably built in 1778 by the Rufus Pinham family, as their home on the farm. The main building of the Christmas Farm Inn dates back to 1786 when the family needed a larger home. The red house was even used as the Jackson jail at one time! The farm eventually passed to new owners, namely Case B. Perkins who converted the buildings to an inn in 1883. Ever since, the property has served the area’s many visitors as a quality New Hampshire hotel.

For over 130 years Christmas Farm Inn has hosted tourists eager to enjoy Jackson’s famous Honeymoon Bridge, the Wildcat River, and the surrounding mountains where hiking and skiing are year round fun. Today’s visitors can see many of the early Jackson buildings that have survived fires, change, and age over the years, in addition to the village’s many new businesses and structures. That’s the wonderful thing about visiting somewhere with so much history—you can see that legacy all around you while enjoying the area’s many contemporary attractions like Storyland, Santa’s Village, and Cranmore’s Mountain Coaster!

Next time you visit Jackson, stay at the Christmas Farm Inn and find a little bit of yesteryear peeking out around every corner! You'll discover why people have been making Jackson their New Hampshire travel destination for over a hundred years, and why Christmas Farm Inn has long been a favorite resort!
